HONDE VALLEY-Parents at Sagambe Primary School in Honde valley staged a demonstration against the head Evans Mwaturuka last week accusing him of swindling funds and making decisions with a two men School Development Committee (SDC).
Mwaturuka refuted the allegations when contacted for a comment by Chipinge Times and referred questions to the District Schools Inspector (DSI) Chipo Mlambo.
“I can give you information concerning what has been transpiring at the school but you need to seek permission from DSI. The school is not running with two SDC members, that is a lie,” said Mwaturuka.
Mlambo said the allegations against the head are baseless as an audit has not been done at the school.
“I cannot comment over that issue because there has been no audit at the school. Those are just unfounded allegations based on hate for the headmaster,” said Mlambo.
The parents alleged that the school has a two men SDC committee led by the chairperson Naome Tapatapa after three other members quit over Mwaturuka’s corruption.
Efforts to get a comment from Tapatapa were futile as her mobile phone went unanswered.
The parents also alleged that the Mwaturuka is failing to produce receipts for building equipment that the school procured for the construction of a classroom block.
A parent who spoke to this paper on condition of anonymity for fear of victimization said that Mwaturuka was also flaunting tender processes and awarding tenders to highest bidders for his benefit.
“The school has 1 200 pupils and out of those, 1 000 have paid US$ 5 for the building project. US$5 000 was raised towards the construction of the classroom block but we are shocked to hear that the headmaster hired the services of a builder who bided US$5 700 instead of a cheaper builder who needed just US$1 500 to construct the block,” said the angry parent.
