BIKITA- One person has died while two others have been discharged from hospital and are receiving treatment at home following a cholera outbreak in Chivaka Village, Bikita.
Masvingo Provincial Medical Director (PMD) Dr Amadeus Shamhu confirmed the development to The Mirror and said his ministry is working around the clock to ensure that the water borne disease is contained before it spreads.
Chivaka villagers do not have tap or borehole water and draw water from Chivaka River which is unsafe for consumption.
Bikita Residents and Ratepayers (BIRRA) spokesperson Mark Mutengani said there is need for an all-inclusive approach from all Government departments involved in ensuring constant supply of water to improve hygiene.
He said the affected area has a severe shortage of boreholes which forces villagers to drink water from Chivaka River and other unsafe sources making them prone to water borne diseases.
“We call upon all Government departments who must ensure access to safe water to react hastily as the affected area is known for shortage of boreholes and people drink water from the river,” said Mutengani
