GOKWE- Former Gokwe Town Council Finance Director, Joconia Nyoni has been appointed as the local authority’s acting Town Secretary following the resignation of Alexander Nyandoro who was also on an acting capacity.
Nyoni confirmed his appointment in an interview with The Mirror.
“Yes I can confirm that I am now the new acting Town Secretary for Gokwe Town Council. I was appointed on December 1, 2023,” he said.
Nyandoro who held the position from 2021 was forced to resign following allegations of abuse of office late last year.
Nyoni was facing criminal abuse of office charges for allegedly flouting procurement and tender procedures that prejudiced Gokwe Town Council of over US$200 000. He was allegedly working in cahoots with dismissed Town Secretary Melania Mandeya.
Amongst the raft of charges, the duo allegedly purchased a 10 KV /10 KWA solar power system from Nerenchia Power Rite Company for US$14 792.50 but paid US$325 435 using the official foreign currency exchange rate thereby prejudicing council.
Nyoni was reinstated by the Local Government Board in September 2022 but faced resistance from councillors.
Mandeya is the last substantive Town Secretary. She was dismissed for abuse of office in February 2020 over the solar payment prejudice.
Joseph Madlokuwa was appointed acting Town Secretary following Mandeya’s dismissal. His tenure was short-lived as he was dismissed by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works for not having the requisite qualifications.
