GWERU – The City of Gweru is set to relocate its dumpsite from its current location near Woodlands suburb to a place along Matopo Road 12 kilometers away from the Midlands capital.
Gweru Mayor Martin Chivhoko confirmed the development to The Mirror. He said the dumpsite will be relocated this year although he could not be drawn into to the expected time of project completion.
“Plans are underway to relocate our dumpsite this year from Woodlands to its new site along Matopo Road. This development comes after we received numerous complaints from residents and civic society groups over health hazards being faced by Woodlands residents.
“Initially, we had set aside US$800 000 devolution funds for the project, however the figure was later reviewed downwards to US$330 000 after residents complained during the budget formulation process,” he said.
Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRA) director Cornelius Selipiwe told The Mirror in an interview that the relocation of the dumpsite if a commendable achievement.
“The issue of having a new dumpsite for Gweru has been a thorn in the flesh for many years. As residents, we are worried about potential health hazards being faced by Woodlands residents and we have been advocating for the relocation of this facility,” he said.
