Mwenezi man jailed 18 years for raping teen

ZVISHAVANE – Regional Magistrate Sengster Tavengwa has sentenced a Mwenezi man to 18 years in jail for raping a high school pupil.
Norman Moyo (37) of Village 3 Sandiza, Chief Maranda, Mwenezi was charged with rape as defined in section 65(1) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform ACT Chapter 9:23.
The incident happened on May 18, 2024, in Mberengwa around 4:30pm.
Circumstances are that the minor (name withheld) was walking home from school alone when she saw Moyo hurriedly walking towards her.
The minor tried running away but Moyo caught up with her and the two walked together.
Upon reaching Manhanzva Mountain, Moyo grabbed the complainant by the neck, choked her and closed her mouth with his hand.
He raped her once after which he threatened her with an okapi knife and left.
The student narrated her ordeal to her aunt who informed other villagers. Moyo was fingered as the suspect because he was the only outsider. He was at the time staying with his girlfriend in a neighbouring village.
Moyo passed through the minor’s village on August 4, 2024, and he was apprehended and surrendered to ZRP Mataga by villagers.
An identification parade was held and the minor identified Moyo.
