MUTARE – Mutare Sports Club rugby outfit (MSC)’s is preparing to go and play in the Zambia sevens Independence Cup on October 29, 2022 in Lusaka.

As part of its training, the team that is popularly known as Shumbaz has invited rugby players from across the province for the squad training.

MSC had their last regional outing in May this year when they took part in the Blessed Gerard Sevens Tournament in Lesotho which they won.

Speaking to the Mirror, Manicaland Rugby Board (MRB) chairman Moss Kapumha said training began last week and it’s open to other clubs.

“As MSC, we are having an open sevens practice at Mutare Sports Club. We started the practice on Tuesday last week. Our training is on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 4:45 pm to 6:30 pm.

“Players from other clubs are welcome to try out for a spot in the MSC sevens squad that will tour Zambia. We are giving them an opportunity to play and go on tour with MSC rugby,” said Kapumha.

He said that the objective is to build a strong team for the tour.

Other clubs that were invited from Zimbabwe include Harare Sports Club and Old Hararians.

“We did well in Lesotho in May after winning the sevens tournament there. We last went to Kitwe in 2018 for 15s tournament. This is our first sevens tournament in Zambia,” he said.

He added that MRB was working tirelessly to grow the sevens rugby to schools and other districts.

“We wish to grow the sevens rugby to schools and to other districts like Chipinge, Rusape and Mutasa in the immediate future for both women and men.

As a board, we need to get rugby started in traditional soccer schools through having training courses for teachers and coaches. We need to decentralise rugby to districts and create district boards that will help manage rugby from the cells,” he said.

Kapumha said they are also working hand in hand with TAG rugby Zimbabwe for them to introduce TAG in all districts as its part of grassroots development.
