MUTARE – Mutare City Council has started consultations for the 2024 annual budget and proposed to raise US$2,425 000 for street lights and traffic lights.
Addressing Civic Society Organisations (CSOs) at Townhouse on Monday, acting Roads Engineer Daniel Nyirenda said the council looked forward to upgrading and installing streetlights in the city to the tune of US$2,42500.00.
The project to refurbish public lighting is under Government partnership with Rwanda (the REG program) and is to the tune of US$2, 12 million, Chpinge Times heard.
“The issue of traffic lights specifically has been a headache to us. We have had traffic light projects that did not come out well because of issues with contractors,” said Nyirenda.
He said the council was looking forward to using its personnel to install traffic lights.
“The nonfunctioning traffic lights are solar powered but initially we planned to use hybrid robots (traffic lights using electricity and solar at the same time). The solar part failed us,” added engineer Nyirenda.
