MASVINGO–A suspected mentally-challenged Mucheke woman cut off the hands and head of her newly born baby on Friday, Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa has confirmed.
Dhewa said Ngonidzashe Mukanhairi (22) of Rungano Street in Mucheke cut the infant after delivering alone at home and bundled the pieces into a plastic black.
Circumstances are that, Ngonidzashe’s guardian Rosewitter Mupfino (76), returned home around 3 pm and found her in a pool of blood.
She inquired from Ngonidzashe, who told her that she was menstruating.
Ngonidzashe also told Mupfino that she lost her pregnancy after praying. She also claimed that air came out of her stomach after praying.
Mupfino took her to Chikato Police Station and reported the matter. Police officers who attended the scene found the baby bundled in a plastic bag in Ngonidzashe’s room.
They inspected the body and discovered its hands and head were cut into pieces.
Police took the remains to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for postmortem. Ngonidzashe is admitted to the same hospital for a medical examination.
Dhewa urged people staying with mentally challenged people to continuously monitor them and ensure they take their medication on time.
