GWERU – Midlands State University (MSU) held a luncheon to honour its law school after winning the prestigious 33rd edition of the Christof Heyns African Moot Court competitions held in Kigali, Rwanda.
The luncheon was held last week at the main campus’s Multi-Purpose Hall. The university’s Vice Chancellor Prof Victor Ngonidzashe Muzvidziwa attended.
The Christof Heyns African Moot Court competition is the largest gathering of students, academics and judges around the theme of human rights in Africa.
MSU’s winning team comprised Watson Tonderai Somerai and Michelle Patricia Chiwanga who were being coached by Claudios Makwara.
Muzvidziwa praised the team for raising the institution and Zimbabwean flags high.
“This success is not just for Midlands State University but for the whole country. You made us proud. These young legal eagles are national heroes. They have raised Zimbabwe’s flag to unprecedented heights on the continental stage and I want to congratulate you,” he said.
Acting Executive Dean of the Law Faculty Dr Amanda Tapiwa Mugadza said the championship is a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring legal scholars across the country.
“This victory is not just a win for MSU but a testament to the rising standards of legal education in the county.
“It underscores the University’s commitment to producing world-class legal professionals equipped to tackle the complex challenges of the 21st century,” said Mugadza.
The Christof Heyns African Moot Court competitions are organised by the Centre for Human Rights, South Africa and is widely regarded as the most prestigious law school contest on the African continent.
MSU was crowned champions ahead of 50 Anglophone, nine Francophone and a Lusophone team after displaying their legal acumen, oratory skills and understanding of human rights law.
The institution pared with Ebonyi State University Abakaliki from Nigeria, University of Nairobi, Kenya and Universitè Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso in the final round.
