CHIREDZI – The Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo has slashed Chiredzi Town Council’s proposed 2023 budget from ZWL$10, 1 billion down to ZWL$7,1 billion.
This has been confirmed by the acting town secretary, Wesley Kauma who said the slashed part of the budget was a loan proposal which the local authority intended to apply from the Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP). Moyo’s reasons for removing the loan component is that the treasury currently has no money.
“We submitted a total of ZWL$10 189 380 852. Minister Moyo removed the part where we had applied for PSIP loans since the treasury has no money for that,” said Kauma.
Major items on the budget are the construction of a new Poly Clinic at Makondo Extension, acquiring a grader and tipper truck and upgrading of water systems and sewerage.
Funding will be generated from own revenue, ZINARA and Devolution Fund.
Kauma said the 2022 budget did not perform well due to inflation and late disbursements of devolution funds.
“Last year our budget was 60 percent successful, we were affected by inflation and late disbursements of devolution funding,” said Kauma.
