MASVINGO – Thieves have become a menace in Morningside where residents have gone for days without power as they strip Zesa cables in the area. Affected are transformers and weather tech cables.
Masvingo Ward 10 councillor Sengerai Manyanga confirmed the thefts and said that Morningside is now a dark city as a result of the crimes.

Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said cops have joined hands with ZESA to find a permanent solution to the problem.
“Cable theft is on the rise in Morningside and Police and Zesa are currently in an operation to arrest the thieves. We urge members of the public to report any suspicious people in the area and warn thieves that the sentence for stealing cables it tough; it is several years in prison,” Dhewa said.

ZESA public relations officer for Masvingo Sharon Chiona said her organisation is in the process of replacing the stolen cables and fixing the transformers. She however could not give the timeframe.
“The situation is so bad. We are trying our best to solve the problem. We are in the process of replacing the cables and fixing transformers,” said Chiona.

Manyanga said he had suggested to Zesa to provide security guards at its transformers as does Econet. https://masvingomirror.com
