GWANDA – The Municipality of Gwanda (MOG) is urging all vendors to utilize the vending stalls instead of selling at illegal places.
The Mayor of Gwanda Councillor Thulani Moyo told Two Nations that vendors should obey council laws.
“Gwanda is one of the towns with vending stalls but if we move around, they are empty, people come and register for a table, but decide to go and sell by the road side, the laws should be obeyed that people should go to their designated area to avoid accidents,” said Moyo.
He emphasized that selling by the road side is a criminal offense.
“According to the Urban councils act, selling good or foodstuffs at any undesignated place is an offence and it can cause accidents, hence I want to urge every vendor to abide by the laws and go to designated areas,” he said.
Team leader for Gwanda community economic justice Trust, Lungile Masuku, she said the vendors should abide by the laws.
“I agree with the council because having vendors selling everywhere in town is making it difficult for council to keep the mining town clean. Papers and empty bottles are lying all over the place, this also causes friction between the council and vendors,” said Masuku.
In an interview with Two Nations, Shantel Mokena, a vendor, said that they face difficulties to sell at the vending stalls.
“We are having a problem with those who are not registered and prefer to sell in corridors. If we go to the stalls, we end up not getting customers. We call on council to force everyone to register and we all go to the right place,” she said.
Bambanani has 106 registered vendors, NSSA stalls has 29, Njanji has 12, while Phakama has 82 registered vendors.
