Masvingo – The Mirror has set up a Special Assignments Desk with a focus on investigative journalism.
The desk will start running from October 1, 2021, and Garikai Mafirakureva, a former editor of The Mirror will be in charge of it. Mafirakureva rejoins The Mirror with effect from the same date.
Mirror Consultant Matthew Takaona said a relevant newspaper must cope with social and economic challenges of the society it serves and the biggest challenge facing Zimbabwe currently is corruption and it needs to be tackled by all and sundry.
“It is not surprising that the weakest link in the country’s fight against corruption might not be Government, the Judiciary or Parliament but the media or Fourth Estate which has lost its investigative instinct,” said Takaona in a statement making the appointment.
The Mirror has some of the fastest growing digital platforms. Before rejoining The Mirror, Mafirakureva was a correspondent for News Day. Before joining The Mirror in November 2008, he worked for The Daily News.
