GWANDA – The Minister of State and Provincial Devolution for Matabeleland South Provincial affairs Evelyn Ndlovu, has urged local authorities to rope in mining companies in the maintenance and construction of roads in her area.
Zimbabwe has some of the worst roads in Southern Africa because of economic problems.
Ndlovu said that there were many mining companies in Matebeleland South and local authorities and heads of Government should approach and urge them to get involved in the maintenance of roads.
She was speaking at a recent provincial development committee meeting.
“We must be innovative in our own space to work with our stakeholders to make sure that they assist us. We have got a lot of mining companies around us who are using our roads, let us be innovative and talk to them about the status of the road they are using and the role that they can play in the rehabilitation of these roads,” said Ndlovu.
She also called on all local authorities to make sure that they clear bushes that spread into the roads sides.
“Each local authority must take the responsibility of clearing the bushes around their roads,” she said
Ndlovu also called for harmony among different Government departments and for quality of data in their reports.
“If we are not working together as teams, there is no way we can as a province excel. Our ministries, departments and agencies have to perform their part to achieve our goals.
“We need to improve on the quality of our reports. Reports should not be mere rituals to meet certain demands. They have to be authentic and everything there should be factual and actual. They should match your annual strategic plans, as well as our provincial economic development plans,” said Ndlovu.
