KWEKWE – The Minister of State for Midlands, Owen Ncube has offered a farm to Kwekwe Prison in a bid to make the rehabilitation and correction centre self-sustaining.
Ncube announced the offer when he handed over donated groceries to prison officers and inmates last Wednesday.
Ncube said he gave the farm to the Prison after hearing about its problems and he promised to procure a sewing machine for women inmates.
The Mirror could not establish where the farm is located or its hectarage.
“We have been told about the problems here at Kwekwe prison. They told us that they want a farm so we have given them the farm. We also heard about the women’s projects so I will buy them a sewing machine,” said Ncube.
The prison is amongst the beneficiaries of the Midlands Independence Fundraising Ball held on April 17, 2024, at King Solomon Hotel in Kwekwe.
Ncube revealed that the fundraising programme raised US$40000 and $25 000 covered hotel expenses and US$15 000 will cover donations throughout the province.
He also handed over 500kgs of mealie meal, sanitary wear and soap to the prison officials and inmates as he appreciated the work being done by prison officers.
“Allow me to appreciate the incarceration, rehabilitation and reinterpretation of inmates by our dedicated officers of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) and implore them to continue this wonderful work,” he said.
The Minister also handed over groceries to Rugare Old People’s home in Amaveni and Mary Hard Children’s Home.
