BIKITA – Alous Janasi (24) of Nyatwa Village, Chief Mukanganwi in Bikita went violent on Saturday and stoned his biological mother to death.
After crashing his mother Tamary Gonera (49)’s head, Janasi ran into the mountains where he returned walking naked.
This is the second murder committed by mentally challenged persons in Masvingo in two days following the murder of Simon Chigoyi by Clever Mhindu who had been refused sex by the former’s daughter-in-law.
The violent behavior of the mentally challenged are attributed to lack of appropriate drugs because the Government is not allocating funds for the purpose.
The assistant Police spokesperson for Masvingo, Sergeant Lloyd Masundire confirmed the incident to The Mirror and urged families with mentally challenged relatives to take them for regular check-ups with psychiatrists.
“Families living with their mentally challenged relatives are encouraged to constantly take them to the psychiatrist for medical attention,” said Masundire.
A Police report seen by The Mirror says on September, 16, 2021 Janasi returned from Nyahunda where he was employed as domestic worker. He exhibited violent behavior and was welcomed by his mother. She alerted relatives of the situation and Janasi’s sister Anna arrived the next morning to see the unwell brother.
At some stage during the day as the mother sat with the two siblings, Janasi started destroying kitchenware with stones. Gonera ordered her daughter and another girl (12) to run away while she remained behind.
Anna rushed to alert her uncle, Tirivafi Panganai but unfortunately as they returned, they found Gonera lying lifeless in a pool of blood with her head crushed with stones.
The body was taken to Ndanga Hospital for postmortem.
