HARARE-Tony Munyonga’s second innings half century was not good enough to save Mega Market Mountaineers from going down to Rhinos by 25 runs in their first four-day game of the 2022/23 Logan Cup at Harare Sports Club.

Munyonga top scored with 89 runs and Tim Maruma was the second leading run scorer in the second innings with 24 runs off 16 deliveries. In  the first innings Rhinos were bowled out for 280 and managed to bowl out  Mountaineers for 271. Rhinos  scored 228 in the second innings and Mega Market Mountaineers scored 212 all out leaving Rhinos to  secure a 25 run victory in the process.

The Mountain Goats as Mega Market Mountaineers are fondly known by it’s legion of supporters will now face Eagles on December 10 at Mutare Sports Club. Coach Njabulo Ncube is happy with his charges’ display despite the lose.

“There were a lot of positives in the last game. Tony (Munyonga) scoring back to back 50s, PJ Moor  scoring 60 and our youngster Spencer Magodo scoring 48 in the 1st innings .Tony is batting beautiful and mature in both innings. Pity  that he didn’t score a 100 in the second innings. Our bowling was good  in patches. Donald Tiripano bowled really well in the 1st innings to get 4 wickets for us.Our captain Wellington Masakadza led from the front and took 5 wickets and ever reliable Victor Nyauchi took 4 wickets in the second innings.

Ncube said his charges went down fighting. He praised his bowlers for a job well-done but he pointed out that his batters did not do well in the second innings.

“Day three of the game, we took 7 wickets in a session and our bowlers did really well. The guys fought well in certain stages of the game, pity we didn’t bat well in the second innings. However it’s water under the bridge. We learnt a lot of lessons and moving on the boys are looking forward into the 3 day internal game  that we are playing at  Mutare Sports club starting this Friday. The good thing is that  we are a fighting team, so we need to soldier on  and be prepared to fight throughout the season,” said the former Zimbabwe International.
