Chiredzi – The MDC-led Chiredzi Town Council (CTC) is among the few local authorities that are yet to receive devolution funds from Government.

Town chairman, Gibson Hwende told The Mirror in an interview that the development is frustrating projects and planning at the local authority.

He said that most local authorities in Masvingo including Chiredzi Rural District Council which is in the same district have since received their devolution funds. Chiredzi RDC for example has received RTGS$18 million.

The devolution funds were received by other local authorities between January and July. Masvingo City Council which is the biggest local authority in the province ahead of Chiredzi Town Council received RTGS$42 million.

The council that has received the lowest amount so far is Zaka which got RTGS$15.4 million.

CTC secretary Charles Muchatukwa said that his council has approached responsible authorities for the funds without success. Government this year set aside RTGS$19 billion in devolution funds for all of the country’s local authorities.

Speaking in an interview with The Mirror, Hwende said he was not sure what was taking long for the devolution funding to be disbursed.

“We haven’t received our devolution funds and we are not sure what is happening. ,” said Hwende.

Chiredzi Town council is chaired by Hwende who is MDC and his deputy Ropafadzo Makumire is an independent. Chiredzi RDC on the other hand is 90% Zanu PF councilors.
