MBERENGWA-An armed robber is battling for his life at Mberengwa District Hospital after being shot in the head and thigh at Clifton Mine.
Benjamin Shoko (26) of Mherevutsvene Village, Chief Chingoma, Mberengwa was shot while stealing gold ore on April 19, 2023.
Mberengwa Magistrate Charity Tonongera remanded him in custody from his hospital bed until May 3, 2023.
Prosecutor Ali Mutausi told the court that Shoko and four accomplices only identified as Petros, Tafadzwa, Prince and Pardon who are still at large went to rob the mine around 1 am.
The gang was armed with machetes and catapults and they manhandled Tendai Mutambanadzo (36) and Simukai Scott (40) whom they tied with electric cables.
They then took US$55 and an H-Mobile cellphone from Scott and an Itel P38 cellphone from Mutambanadzo before they proceeded to steal gold ore.
Their co-workers Gedion Chikwanda and Takundavamwe Mhazo arrived at the scene armed with a CZ Vizor pistol.
Shoko’s accomplices fled while the former charged at the gun-wielding men threatening to kill them.
He went on to wrestle with Mhazo who withdrew a pistol and fired randomly.
Mhazo shot Shoko once on the right thigh and once on the left side of the head. Shoko was taken to ZRP Mberengwa where a report was filed before he was taken to the hospital for medical attention.
