Mberengwa council clerk in court for fraud

MBERENGWA – A senior clerk at Mberengwa Rural District Council (RDC) has appeared in court on charges of theft and abusing council funds.
Kurai shoko (41) who stays in Mataga appeared before Mberengwa Magistrate Caroline Tafira-Nyoni this week and full trial will start tomorrow.
The allegations are that Shoko stole ZAR9 395 from the council funds and again converted US$1 653 to his personal use.

The State represented by Faith Mwale said in September 2021, the complainant Nyembesi Shoko who is the council Chairperson received complaints of abuse of council funds from stakeholders and that prompted an audit to be carried out from June 29, 2020 to October 2021 by the Internal Auditor Jairos Masiye.
Masiye carried out a cash count with the accused and there was a total of ZAR159 990 on October 18, 2021
The auditor did the counting of cash amount himself and this led to the establishment of a Rand currency shortfall of ZAR9395 which the accused omitted to account for.

In June 2022 Assistant Executive Officer Melody Hove did a procedural year end cash count with Shoko. All the cash was withdrawn from the safe and put on the table for counting.
They counted and established that there was US$28 900, the Zimdollar was ZW$44 465 and the Rand was ZAR156 092 and they signed and returned the cash to the safe.
A shortfall of US$ was later discovered and it was realised that Shoko was converting US$ to RTGS$ and returning the RTGS$ back into the safe. He converted US$1 653 for his personal use.https://masvingomirror.com
