MASVINGO – Acquanos Mazhunga, head of Gokomere, one of the best high schools in the country has left.
Masvingo Catholic Diocese Education Secretary, Father Samson Mutsvanga confirmed the news adding that Mazhunga was now in Harare where he is heading a school in Epworth.
The Mirror also contacted Mazhunga who confirmed the development. Mazhunga’s deputy, Cephas Vhurumuku is the acting head.
“Mr Mazhunga has transferred to Harare and his wife is also in Harare. He left at the beginning of this term,” said Father Mutsvanga.
Father Mutsvanga who is also the Priest-in-Charge at Gokomere Mission said the school is now looking for a new head.
“Yes, I am no longer at Gokomere. I will come back and properly notify you,” said Mazhunga.
Gokomere had over the last few years generally lost its lustre due to a number of factors including high staff turnover that saw teachers joining private schools while others left for the diaspora to do menial work because of poor teachers’ salaries in Zimbabwe and the hard economic times.
Mazhunga joined Gokomere in 2018 following a transfer from Mukaro High.
Gokomere for many decades remained Masvingo Province’s best academic school. It was also a great sporting institution.
