ROSELINE MUTARE
TWO NATIONS REPORTER

GWANDA – Mat South agriculture Provincial Director, Shupikai Sibanda has called for more irrigation schemes and expansion of those that already exist in the province as the drought threatens to cause havoc this year.
Sibanda told Two Nations that the rainfall is already way too low so far this year.
“The rain started late and rainfall is currently below normal to normal depending on the area. Planting delayed and the bulk of crops are at vegetative stage, hence there is need for Irrigation development and expansion,” said Sibanda.
She said farmers in the province are discouraged from growing maize.
“Mat South is in the agro-ecological regions 4 and 5 so we discourage maize and encourage traditional drought resistant crops grown under the Intwasa/Pfumvudza programme ,” she said.
Mat South has 36 irrigation schemes which include 16 communal, two estates and seven under rehabilitation.
