GWANDA- Early rains received across the country have affected 218 hectares of winter wheat in Matebeleland South.
The province’s acting Director Agricultural Rural Development and Advisory Services, Mkhunjulelwa Ndlovu confirmed the matter to Two Nations.
He also added that some of the plant was affected by hailstorms.
“Generally, there wasn’t much effect on the crop provided the rains tail off and sunny conditions remains, we lost 218ha out of 4 578ha planted,” he said.
Some of the affected farmers and irrigation schemes are in Gwanda with 34 ha lost, Beitbridge 30 ha, Mangwe 12 ha, Insiza about 76 ha and Matobo about 66 ha.
Ndlovu urged farmers to harvest their wheat before the rains do more damage.
“We planted 4 578 ha in the province and we were expecting 4 tonnes per ha. So far over 1 000 ha has been harvested. I am encouraging farmers to harvest their wheat before the rains do more harm,” he said.
