Masvingo – Award-winning Masvingo junior karateka Monica Victor (16) has won 12 gold medals, two silver and a bronze medal since 2016 in various competitions.
She won her only bronze medal at the Gabs Open tournament held in Gaborone, Botswana, last week on Saturday .
Victor, a Form 4 student at Masvingo Christian College, was the only Zimbabwean at the tournament. She used her funds to attend the competition. The tournament featured participants from the Southern region aged 16 and 17.

She told The Mirror that she hopes to represent the country at major competitions, but sponsorship has been her biggest hurdle.
“I grew up watching karate movies and began training karate in 2015 when I was doing Grade 5 at Chikato Primary School, but because I am a girl, most people looked down on me. I want to represent Zimbabwe, but my biggest hurdle is sponsorship.
“I missed out on a regional tournament held in South Africa on May 24, 2022, and an international tournament held in Dubai last year. My mother is a vendor and is my biggest supporter. She strives to ensure that I compete in all tournaments,” said Victor.

Her coach, Casmore Adini said Victor is an astute sportsperson with exceptional talent but is struggling to attend tournaments because of a lack of funding.
“She has missed out on regional and international tournaments because of lack of sponsorship. Monica is a distinguished karateka and is excelling in a sport that is normally dominated by boys. She is naturally talented,” said Adini.

Victor is supported by her mother who makes a living as a vendor. She
She recently won the inter-provincial junior Karate Championships held on May 14, 2022, in Kwekwe and has been a member of the Zimbabwe national karate team since 2017. Victor also scooped the Japanese Ambassador’s Zimbabwe Junior Karate Association (ZJKA) tournament in 2017.https://masvingomirror.com
