MASVINGO AGRIC SHOW – Masvingo Province is ranked third on child marriages and teenage pregnancies, Herbert Chikosi, a spokesperson for Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) has said.
Speaking from Masvingo Agricultural Show where the council is exhibiting and conducting awareness campaigns, Chikosi also expressed concern that youth in the province were using drugs extracted from diapers and menstrual pads to intoxicate themselves.
It is because of this that ZNFPC has adopted a three-point campaign plan to remove youth from drug abuse and encourage parents to engage their children on sensitive issues.
Child marriages, teenage pregnancies, drug abuse, maternal mortality rate, gender-based violence and sexually transmitted infections (STI), HIV and AIDS are the six key health problems affecting youth, said Chikosi.
In order to extract the drugs, the youth boil menstrual pads and drink the thick white liquid to get intoxicated. Youth are also abusing crystal meth.
“ZNFPC is providing family planning, contraceptives and general information to the public. We are chasing three aspects, medical health management where we are trying to reduce stigma on menstruation and providing information on reusable pads and making them available,” said Chikosi.
