MASVINGO – Police in Masvingo yesterday arrested a woman who wanted to buy cooking oil using a fake US$50 at Metropeech & Browne.
Police was phoned after the shop’s employees discovered that the woman had US$1 250 in fake notes and she kept changing her statements on where she got the fake money.
Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the arrest of Memory Mandigora (32) to The Mirror. He said investigations are underway.
The shop’s manager Nomore Chigwenese said Mandigora gave a fake US$50 note to Nicholas Mushava, a till operator to purchase cooking oil. Mushava told Mandigora that her money was fake.
He said that she produced another fake US$50 note and that is when Mushava brought Mandigora to his office. It was only after they quizzed her that they discovered that she had US$1 250 in fake notes.
“The client wanted to purchase cooking oil using a fake US$50 note. The till operator who served her realised that the money was fake and she produced another fake US$50 note. He then brought her to my office.
“The woman initially stated that she got the money from an illegal forex trader at Beitbridge Border Post and later said that she got the money from a cross border haulage truck driver she always exchanges currencies with. We then discovered that she had US$1 250 in fake notes and we phoned Inspector Dhewa,” said Chigwenese.
Mandigora’s husband Benevolence Mashiri who is based in South Africa told The Mirror that his wife travelled from SA on Sunday and she exchanged Rands with the US$ with an illegal forex trader.
