MASVINGO – Masvingo Teachers College traditional dance ensemble Gango has won this year’s provincial edition of the Delta Beverages sponsored Chibuku NeShamwari Traditional Dance Festival.
The group walked away US$2 500 richer from the festival held at Hwiru Beerhall in Gutu on Saturday.
Gango will represent the province at the national finals slated for July 27, at Mucheke Stadium, Masvingo.
Dzimbabzamabwe Cultural Dance Troupe from Nemamwa in Masvingo came second and received US$1 500. Musa from Masvingo came third and pocketed US$1 000.
The other seven competing groups received US$500 consolation prizes each. There weren’t any competing groups from Bikita, Chivi, Chiredzi and Mwenezi.
Chibuku NeShamwari is sponsored by Delta Corporation through its Chibuku brand and organized by Zimbabwe National Arts Council (NAC) and Zimbabwe National Traditional Dances Association (ZNTDA).
The festival was attended by NACZ Director Napoleon Nyanhi, ZNTDA president Kennedy Kachuruka, Delta management and staff and hundreds of residents.
This year’s competition is running under the theme: Tamba Tione, Gida Sibone!
Gango performed the Mbakumba, a thanksgiving dance after a bumper harvest. The group has 11 female and four male members.
The group’s trainer and lecturer Molly Chirume said they are elated to have won the provincial competition and will polish their act for the national championships.
“We are proud to have won the competition. We gave it our all and we will polish our act for the national event. Our youngest member is 21 and the oldest is 35,” she said.
