MASVINGO-The Masvingo Teachers College held its inaugural culture day festival yesterday to mark the country’s heritage and cultural diversity.
The commemorations were held under the theme; ‘Our culture, our identity’.
Regional Director for National Museums and Monuments, Lovemore Mandima, was the guest of honour.
College Principal Ben Mutambudzi said commemorations are important as they help people, particularly the youth, to share and learn more about the different cultures in the country.
“The commemorations are of paramount importance, and we take this opportunity to share and learn more about our different cultures as a multicultural institution. We are showcasing our cultural diversity through exhibitions of cultural artefacts, traditional foods, songs and dance,” said Mutambudzi.
The College was joined by Great Zimbabwe University (GZU), Rujeko High School, Victoria High and Victoria Junior Schools, which also exhibited and provided entertainment.
Mandima urged people to eat traditional food as they promote health, to take pride in their culture and desist from adopting Western cultures.
“Our food is our identity. People know us better with the food we eat, and the significance of our traditional food is beyond imagination. I, therefore, urge people to resort to traditional food for health purposes,” he said.
