Masvingo student nurses’ hostels closed for a year
MASVINGO– Student nurses’ hostels at Masvingo Provincial Hospital have been closed for a year now forcing more than 100 students to rent accommodation in surrounding suburbs.
The situation has seriously constrained the students’ meagre allowances which are now being spent on rent.
Sources also told The Mirror that pass rates have significantly dropped because the new accommodation environment is not conducive for nursing studies.
Masvingo Provincial Medical Director (PMD), Doctor Amadeus Shamu confirmed the matter in a telephone interview.
“The hostels have been closed down since last year and the challenge is water which has not been getting to that area. The water system is being attended to. I will have to find out when the rehabilitation will be completed,” said Shamu.
The dormitories have also been experiencing frequent sewer pipe bursts.
Student nurses who spoke to The Mirror on condition of anonymity said staying outside the school’s residence is making their lives difficult because of the cost of living.
