Masvingo records low snake bites fatality rate
MASVINGO – Masvingo Province could be recording very low fatality rate from snake bites after only three people out of 602 bitten between January and December 2023 died.
The fatality rate is 0.5% or 1 person in every 200. The three deaths were because the victims were taken late to hospital said Masvingo Provincial Medical Director Dr Amadeus Shamhu.
The cases were recorded in Bikita, Chiredzi, Chivi, Gutu, Mwenezi, Zaka and Masvingo districts.
Masvingo District has the highest number of cases at 159 and one death.
Chiredzi sits at number two with 125 snake bites and zero deaths.
Zaka is on third position with 105 snake bites and zero fatalities. Bikita district has 65 snake bites and Gutu has also recorded 65 cases of snake bites with zero deaths.
Chivi has 48 cases and Mwenezi 35 and they each got one fatality.
