Masvingo records 8 fatal festive season accidents

MASVINGO – Masvingo Province has recorded 35 festive season accidents. Eight accidents were fatal and claimed 13 lives, provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa has said.

He told The Mirror that 47 people were injured in the accidents. The festive season runs from December 15-January 15 annually.  

“We are still recording festive season accident cases. From the period of December 15, 2023, to date 13 people died from the accidents that happened in the province. We had a total of 47 people who were injured from the accidents. We urge motorists to adhere to road rules and value human life,” he said.

The first fatal accident claimed McAulife Itai Nhika (27) on December 18, 2023, near Gokomere Mission. A Harare bound Toyota Hilux double vehicle he was a passenger in encroached into the lane of a haulage truck resulting in a head-on collision. 

The second fatal accident claimed the life of Prosper Marashani on the same day near Sikato Business Centre. He was involved in a hit and run accident with an unknown vehicle as he attempted to cross the Masvingo-Nemamwa Road.

Another accident claimed four lives on December 21 around 1 am the at 339 kilometer peg along Harare-Masvingo road. An Isuzu truck collided with a Jaguar vehicle killing Isheunesu Zimbanje (30), Nicodemas Zimbanje (28), Previous Vheremu (24) and a five months old girl all hailing from Zaka.

Two accidents occurred on December 23, 2023, claiming six lives. Everright Kuuya (31) was hit and killed by a Honda Fit while trying to cross the Tokwe-Mhandamambwe road while Joseph Zindove (55) and two minors died in another accident along Masvingo-Zimuto road after the driver of a Toyota Ipsum lost control of the vehicle. . 

Previous Maunda (19) and Paul Taruvinga (19) of Bikita died on December 30, 2023, after the driver of a Toyota Fortuner they were travelling in lost control of the vehicle at the 226 kilometer peg along Mutare-Masvingo road. A hit and run accident claimed one in Mucheke on December 31, last year.
