Masvingo panics over new suburban quarantine

MASVINGO – A quarantine centre in the centre of the sprawling suburb of Mucheke has sent cold chills down residents’ spines as they think that this can result in a spike in Covid-19 cases in the area.

Covid-19 provincial taskforce spokesperson, Rodgers Irimayi confirmed to The Mirror that a new centre was opened at the DDF offices near Don Bosco Roman Catholic Church on Friday last week to lift pressure on three other centres in Masvingo Province that are overwhelmed.

DDF has a holding capacity of 40 inmates and it started with 23 inmates, Irimayi said.

The biggest quarantine centre at Mushagashe Vocational Training Centre with a capacity of 144 has 114 inmates; Bikita quarantine Centre at Bikita Training centre with a capacity of 40 inmates has 37.

Rupangwana quarantine centre with a capacity to house 26 inmates has 19 inmates.

“We opened a new quarantine centre at DDF offices in Mucheke because other quarantine centres are overwhelmed. The centre has a capacity of 40 inmates,” said Irimayi.

Irimayi urged residents not panic over the centre’s location as it is secured by security details.
