MASVINGO-In its bid to fight drug abuse Masvingo Chess Association held provincial chess open tournament at a local hotel last week. The tournament ran under the theme; “Nurturing drug abstinence through chess.” The tournament saw 40 participants across Zimbabwe participating.


Masvingo Chess Association Vice Chairperson, Masimba Mutakaya said the tournament was very competitive and he applauded the sponsors. The tournament was sponsored by Byword Motors, Regency Hotel Group and Jerry Moyana of KwaJerry Kunyama.
“The tournament was a success due to the generosity of the visionary sponsors who are bent on promoting a drug-free world for us all. If it was not for them this tournament would not have been a success.


“It was a competitive tournament where we witnessed brilliant moves and interesting strategies,” said Mutakaya.
Elisha Murandu was the overall winner with 5.5 points of a total of 6 points and walked away with a US$50 prize. Spencer Moyo came second with 5 points and received US$30 followed by Emmanuel Rabvu who pocketed US$20.


The best female player prize money of US$15 was scooped by Fadzi Muchakazi a scholar from Mucheke High with 3.5 points. All the participants who won prizes went away with certificates.
Present at the tournament were players from Chitungwiza, Gweru, Filabusi, Chiredzi, Gutu as well as schools including Mucheke High and Utsinda Christian College as well as Great Zimbabwe University (GZU).https://masvingomirror.com
