MASVINGO – Masvingo City Council has taken water samples from Mucheke and Shagashe Rivers for testing in the wake of fish dying in the rivers.
Social media reports caused an outcry after a video circulated showing some dead fish in the river.
Answering to questions asked by Mayor Collen Maboke on Monday, town clerk Edward Mukaratirwa confirmed that indeed raw sewage flowed into the rivers and blamed the situation on people who are vandalising council infrastructure.
“We sent samples from Mucheke and Shagashe Rivers to Harare after reports of fish dying in the two rivers, we want to get scientific proof that the water cannot support aquatic life and see how we can solve the problem,” said Mukaratirwa.
Engineers are working to stop further sewage leakages, said Mukaratirwa.
Last week EMA told the local authority to quickly address the sewer leakages.
Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Association (MURRA) spokesperson Godfrey Mutimba said his organisation wrote a letter to council on the matter and asked for the results of the tests to be made public.
