MUTARE -Police in Manicaland are warning the public to be wary of lightning as the nation experiences high incidences of people who die from the weather phenomenon.
This follows the death of a 22-year-old Marange man from lightning as he walked home from Mukwada Business Centre over the weekend.
Manicaland Police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed that Abibi Mhuka of Mupangayi Village under Chief Marange was hit by lightning as he headed home from Mukwada Business Centre where he had spent time with his employer Remember Ziduche.
“On December 8, 2022, the deceased was sent home which is located about 500m from Mukwada Business Centre to deliver some chickens’ home. As he was walking it started raining and he was struck by lightning along the way. Nyasha Mutova (age not given) who was herding cattle nearby heard of the noise of the lightning and proceeded to the scene where he found Abibi lying unconscious.
“We urge the public to exercise extreme caution especially when it is raining. People should not seek shelter under tall trees and of late we have noticed that there are people with a tendency of using cellphones when there is a thunderstorm. This is wrong as well because a cellphone can act as an electric conductor resulting in people getting shocked or even dying,” said Muzondo.
