MASVINGO- A Hwendedzo man found with 20kg of dagga in his garden left the court in stitches after he told the court that he uses the dagga to exorcise evil spirits.
Magistrate Rethagtcetsi Silaigwana remanded Zakaria Nega (47) in custody to May 8, 2023 for illegal cultivation of dagga was.
He is pleading not guilty to the charge. He is insisting that he does not smoke or sell the dagga but uses it as incense to exorcise evil spirits.
Circumstances are that on April 14, 2023 around 12 pm, Police officers who were on patrol in Hwendedzo received a tip off that Nega was cultivating dagga in his garden at Plot 6, Hwendedzo.
The Police details went to Nega’s garden uprooted dagga plants weighing 20kg. The plants were between 159cm-349cm long. Nega was arrested on April 15, 2023 at his homestead.
In another case, Magistrate Silaigwana fined Liberty Muviringi (38) US$20 after he was found in possession of two twists of dagga weighing 0.005kg.
Prosecutor Godknows Mugondo told the Court that on April 5, 2023, Police detectives were on patrol in Chipinda area when they received a tip off that Muviringi was in possession of dagga.
Police reacted to the information and approached Muviringi at his house where they searched him and seized two twists of dagga from his pocket and arrested him.
