Man says 93kgs mbanje was for asthmatic wife

Masvingo – James Manatsa (53) who was found with 60 plants of marijuana weighing 90kg has told a Masvingo magistrate that the mbanje is for medicinal purpose.
He said he used the intoxicating herb which he grew at Village 32D in Mushandike Resettlement under Chief Charumbira to treat his wife who is asthmatic.
“My wife and myself are asthmatic. I used to spend a lot of money buying mbanje to treat this ailment until someone advised to grow mbanje for my own supply,” said Manatsa.
Magistrate Conceptor Ngwerume slapped the accused with a 22-month jail term although Government has plans afoot to grow mbanje for medicinal purposes under State issued licences.
Heather Mhlanga represented the State.
Manatsa pleaded for a non-custodial sentence as he is the one who looks after his sickly wife.
