Man missing in Munyati River after home-made boat capsized

KWEKWE -An unidentified man from Kwekwe was swept away by flooded Munyati River in Kwekwe when a homemade boat he was using with three others capsized on Wednesday afternoon.

His body had not yet been found by yesterday afternoon. Two of his companions swarm to safety. 

Kwekwe District Development Coordinator (DDC) who is the district’s Civil Protection  (CPU) Chairperson, Fortune Mpungu confirmed the incident which happened on Wednesday. 

“I can confirm receiving a report where a man drowned in Munyati River while two others managed to swim to safety after a homemade canoe they were sailing on capsized. 

“Search teams are still on the ground after they have failed to locate his body yesterday (Wednesday),” he said. 

He emphasized the need to exercise extreme caution during heavy rains that have been pounding the country. 

“As Civil Protection Unit (CPU), we want to take this opportunity to advise all schools in the district not to allow pupils to cross flooded rivers. 

” Those who are staying in low lying areas like Silobela and Empress that are prone to flooding should always be on high alert. 

“We also advise those staying near water bodies like dams and rivers to vacate to higher ground in case of flooding, ” he said. 

He warned artisanal miners against operating underground during the ongoing rainy season. 

“Once again, the Civil Protection Unit takes this opportunity to advise artisanal miners to avoid practicing underground mining especially between 25 February and 23 March, 2023 to allay any eventualities,” he said.
