Chikomba – Liebenberg High School has made Chivhu proud after its girls’ team won the National Crystal Chess League tournament held in Harare last Sunday.
Some 36 schools across the country, 18 primary and 18 secondary gathered at Conelius Hope Academy for the tournament.
Players from Queens of Chivhu Chess Club like Grace Zvarebwa and Ruramai Tapambwa dominated the star-studded Liebenberg team.
The local club has won several national championships and their most outstanding player Zvarebwa who is doing Form 1 at Liebenberg is the reigning under 16 National Champion at 12 years. She represented Zimbabwe recently in Egypt.
Both Zvarebwa and Tapambwa were in sterling form and scooped the Best players on boards 4 and 5 respectively.
Liebenberg High chess team coach, Godknows Dembure expressed satisfaction with his players’ performance. He thanked those from the Chivhu community for supporting chess.
The team comprised of Zvarebwa, Tapambwa, Tanaka Marufu, Natalie Chaibva and Ngonidzashe Jaya.
Liebenberg High head, Tinashe Sangu congratulated the team that brought the trophy home. He added that the school would support all talented students.
“I want to congratulate all Liebenberg students who participated in the tournament. They made us proud. This was achieved through hard work, dedication and good leadership. This will motivate all our students. Grace is our best chess player and the school will forever support her,” said Sangu.
He said it was also a notable achievement to see pupils from a school like Liebenberg shining in an elite spot. He also congratulated Chiziya, a school from remote Gokwe which lifted the boys’ national trophy.
“I want to urge Naph and Nash to support chess as they do all other sporting disciplines,” said Dembure.
