MASVINGO –Police Commissioner General, Godwin Matanga, has urged the nation to uphold peace during and after the 2023 general elections.
He said this on Saturday during the Old Mutual-sponsored Commissioner General (CG) of Police’s twelfth edition of the 21km road race held in Masvingo for the first time since its inception.
“Today, people from all walks of life have gathered and competed, in a peaceful environment. We wish to see this happening in the country Zimbabweans coming together and working in amity.
“As the 2023 harmonised elections beckon, let us uphold peace and tranquility. Let us campaign, vote, celebrate our victory and accept the outcome peacefully. Let us shun violence. Remember, we are one people with a common destiny hence let us learn to love one another and live together,” said Matanga.
He was accompanied by Deputy Police CG human resources Mind Elliot Ngirande, ZRP sports chairperson commissioner Abigail Moyo, Old Mutual funeral services Japhet Nyamuchengwa, Commander 4 Infantry Brigade Brigadier General Elphias Mahachi, Officer Commanding Masvingo Commissioner David Mahoya and Masvingo City town clerk Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa among others.
The CG road race is held annually to strengthen Police relations with the community and encourage wellness.
Matanga’s sentiments come at a time political violence has gripped parts of the nation, particularly in Gutu, where opposition party members in particular Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC) are allegedly persecuted by powerful Zanu PF politicians.
Recently two CCC activist brothers were assaulted and made to roll in a sewer by alleged Zanu PF activists for wearing party regalia. Another CCC activist Nyasha Zhambe died after he was assaulted at an illegal Zanu PF manned roadblock near Mpandawana last year.
