KWEKWE – Kwekwe City Council has published a tender for the installation of street lights in residential areas, the council’s Finance and General Purposes Committee chairperson and Ward 1 Councillor Alex Senge has said.
He told a full council meeting held on Friday that council has already published a tender calling for suppliers of materials for street lights.
He was responding to questions raised by other councillors over poor street lightning that has seen a surge in nighttime robberies and break-ins.
“We have already issued out a tender and we are waiting for the process to be done so that we have a supplier to address our street lighting challenges. We look forward to cover the whole city through this project,” he said.
Ward 14 Councillor Mavis Gatsheni complained that break-ins and robberies in his ward have increased owing to poor street lightning.
“In Ward 14 we need street lights because there are a spate of robberies and break-ins caused by the darkness. Residents have been living in the darkness especially in Golden Acres area and this needs to be addressed,” said Gatsheni.
Kwekwe Mayor Albert Zinhanga said Wards 10 and 14 are the most affected by poor lightning.
“Ward 10 and 14 have been affected by lack of street lights which has resulted in robberies. Budget consultations are fast approaching and we should have addressed this issue before that because residents will ask questions and it will not be fair on their part. We need to address this problem,” he said.
