Kwekwe holds Mayor’s sports tourney

KWEKWE – Kwekwe City is hosting this year’s edition of the Mayor’s Challenge Tournament next Saturday at Mbizo Stadium and Manunure High School grounds.
The tournament will feature sixteen football and sixteen netball teams drawn from schools in the district.
Kwekwe Mayor, Albert Zinhanga confirmed the tournament to The Mirror. He said this year’s edition is premised on the bid to fight against drug and substance abuse amongst school pupils.
“I am thrilled to announce that Kwekwe City will be hosting a high school football and netball tournament next month on August 3, 2024. This exciting event is aimed at bringing the community together in a spirit of healthy competition and fighting drug and substance abuse as well as child marriages through sports.
“The tournament will be held at Mbizo stadium and Manunure high school ground from 8am, the final will take place at Mbizo stadium on the same day. There will be sixteen football and sixteen netball teams taking part in this year’s tournament,” said Zinhanga.
The tournament will be supported by health and developmental organizations that will provide social support services as counselling and wellness lessons.
Some of the schools that are expected to participate include Manunure High School, Mbizo High, Fatima High (Silobela) and Rio Tinto Zhombe High School among others.
