lf you pass through Parkttown in downtown Waterfalls, and go deep South along Sixth, you encounter a roundabout full of treacherous potholes.
After it, you come across Cheviot Avenue, a road that descends into Cheviot Shopping Center where a new bar which sells cold beer and roast rabbit has been opened..
Yes, roast rabbit in peanut butter soup, the way we sampled it in rural Shurugwi
It has an outdoor stage where musicians showcase their skills out there in the open while imbibers shout and gyrate and dance, and as Dambudzo Marechera would say, solicit sex.
And today, there is Kireni Zulu on the outdoor stage.
Where he belts out humour.
He sings a soulful song laden with meaning, and Kireni Zulu perched up there on stage like a High Court Judge about to deliver a devastating verdict; says;
“Clap hands for me, if
you don’t, I’ll massacre
the whole bar. But why
do you bother, is your
name “the whole bar?”
Uproarious laughter.
Such is Cheviot, where Zimbabwe’s tribulations are kept at bay.
