Justice Makarau launches 2024 Legal Year

MASVINGO – Constitutional Court Judge, Justice Makarau has today officially opened the 2024 Legal Year. The opening took place at the High Court in Masvingo.

Highlights of the opening

  • Commented Senior Judge; Justice Mawadze and Judge Zisengwe for clearing 2 029 civil and criminal cases (609 civil and 1 420 criminal). The clearance rate is above 95,5%. 2 094 cases were cleared in 2022.
  • Theme of the opening was: The Role of the Judiciary in Entrenching Constitutionalism
  • Despite connectivity and other serious challenges, the clearance of cases was not seriously affected by the introduction of the Integrated Electronic Case Management System (IECMS), Virtual courts.
  • Makarau emphasized the importance of the event which is steeped in history and said its purpose is interaction and feedback from stakeholder. Judges should not be talking down to communities; the event is not a monologue.
  • Virtual Court System is stifling Press coverage. Journalists cannot cover civil and labour cases which clients, lawyers and judges hear from the comfort of their offices.
  • Justice Makarau debated constitutionalism 
  • Magistrates Courts dealt with 7 147 cases and 6 974 were cleared
  • Justice Makarau emphasized the need for Press to cover traditional courts. She said this an issue that must be attended to.
