Gweru – It never rains for jailed former Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs Jason Machaya.
Machaya who is serving a prison sentence of four years was at the Gweru Magistrates Court yesterday facing fresh charges of criminal abuse of office involving the alleged illegal sale of State land.
In the fresh case, he is jointly charged with Cicilia Chitio who is the former Midlands Provincial Administrator; Matilda Manhambo, former Housing Officer; Sherpard Marweyi former Gweru District Administrator; Chisiyinyerwa Chibururu former Provincial Physical Planning; Ethel Mlalazi Director for the Department of Physical Planning; Honest Magaya Deputy Director for the Department of Physical Planning and Rhory Shawata Principal Administrative Officer for State Land Management.
Prosecutor Andrew Kumire said during the period Machaya was Minister, he connived with seven other government officials to unlawfully allocate State land in Gweru, Zvishavane and Gokwe.
The court recorder however broke down when Machaya’s lawyer Norman Mugiya of Mugiya and Muvhami Law Chambers was giving a notice of application.
Mugiya requested monthly reports in relation to all projects which were sent to the then President Robert Mugabe.
He also requested Cabinet resolutions in relation to all land schemes in which Machaya is being charged and the Master plan for Gweru, Zvishavane and Gokwe.
The court however resolved that all the applications be submitted in writing after all the accused’s lawyers highlighted that they wanted to make applications.
The case was remanded to August 31, 2021 for judgment of the right applications.
