MASVINGO – The Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe in partnership with Gutu Rural District Council (RDC) will construct a 5MW solar power generation facility at Wheatlands and Berrysprings farms in Gutu.

Mazedeck Venture Private Limited, a local environmental and social impact assessment consultancy firm appointed by the project funders has since called for opinions and concerns from the affected people and communities.

The written opinions and objections must reach Mazedeck by December 31, 2022 for them to be considered.

The farm is 8km outside Mpandawana Growth Point along along Chatsworth – Gutu Road.

The project is confirmed in an Environmental Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) public notice issued out by the Bank last week. Gutu RDC CEO, Alexander Mutembwa also confirmed the project adding that it would be completed early next year.

“The project will involve land preparation, civil works, installation of a 5MW solar power generation facility, construction of a 1km power transmission line, relaxed fixtures and construction of ancillary infrastructure. The works will also entail connection of the proposed plant to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) grid via a XY kV feeder line from AB to BC substation,” reads part of the statement.

Mutembwa hailed the project.

“This is a great achievement as it will help bring about an alternative source of electricity and alleviate current shortages facing the country,” said Mutembwa.
