MASVINGO – A 19-year-old suspected robber has told a Masvingo magistrate that he was detained in custody for 11 days at CID Masvingo instead of the maximum period of 48 hours allowed before one goes to court.
Tatenda Mawadze of Zviregi Village under Chief Bota said he could not speak properly in court because he was tortured throughout the 11 days by cops at Masvingo Central CID and particularly the one identified as Ncube. He was arrested after he allegedly broke into a house in Chibi Street in Mucheke and stole various items including cell phones and US$105.
His alleged accomplice Romeo Dzingai is still at large.
He said he was arrested on January 19 and only came to court on February 2, 2023.
Magistrate Phillip Makondo remanded the case to February 13, 2023 as the court is still investigating the complainant’s case. Nixon Chamisa prosecuted.
Mawadze said the detectives tied his face with a jacket as they kicked him on the chest. He brought a medical report as an exhibit.
It is the State case that Mawadze and Dzingai broke into Tadiwanashe Motsi’s house and stole while the complainant was asleep. The duo went away unnoticed.
Police investigations led to the arrest of Mawadze and Police recovered black jeans only.
