MASVINGO-Hwiru Primary School scooped its fifth National Aids Council (NAC) national quiz competition yesterday at Prince Edward High School in Harare.
The Gutu based school scooped gold in 2017, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. It scooped silver medals in 2018 and 2019 when it failed to win gold.
School head Artinos Tonhodzai confirmed the development to The Mirror. He applauded the quiz and their coaches Tariro Mazonde and Fredrick Tavhanya.
The quiz team comprises Patience Musasa, Ruvimbo Murwira, Dinero Shumba, Providence Musanjeya and Takudzwa Munanga.
The quiz is organised by NAC and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
Efforts to get a comment from Ministry of Education spokesperson Taungana Ndoro were futile.
The 2023 edition ran under the theme: Instructional School Leadership and Teacher Effectiveness in Pupil Empowerment Towards Vision 2030.
Nyanga based Mt Melleray Primary came second place with Umvhukwesi Primary from Mashonaland Central on third place. Winners will be crowned tonight.
NAC and the Ministry of Education are implementing life teaching skills, HIV and AIDS, sexual education and guidance and counseling through the quiz to pupils.
Hwiru coach Mazonde said they hope to win more gold medals.
“We are impressed with this achievement. It’s now our fifth trophy. The quiz competitions are now in our DNA and obviously this achievement came from hard work. “Hwiru Primary is a model school in Guidance and Counseling. We are happy with this achievement and we are waiting for our prizes tonight,” he said.
