CHIREDZI-Chiredzi Town Council has its second alderman in current town chairperson Gibson Hwende.
He was conferred the status on Thursday at a Chiredzi lodge.
Aldermanship is a status given to a councillor who has served for 10 consecutive years or a mayor or chairperson who has served for eight consecutive years.
The only other councillor to have been conferred the status by the local authority is the late Alderman Albert Mahiya.
Chiredzi District Development Coordinator (DDC), Lovemore Chisema was the guest of honor and he urged Hwende to remain humble.
“Leaders come from God and this appointment comes with great responsibility so you should remain humble,” said Chisema.
Hwende joined the council in 2013 as Ward 1 councillor and he was re-elected for a second term in 2018 when he also became the council chairperson.
Chiredzi Town acting Town Secretary, Wesley Kauma described Hwende as a humble and hard working person dedicated to the development of Chiredzi.
“On 24 March, 2022 we sat as council and agreed to appoint Hwende as an alderman after we considered that he had reached the stipulated years for one to be considered an alderman.
“During his time Hwende pioneered many projects in the council,” said Kauma.
Hwende said he will continue serving the town regardless of his new status.
“I will continue to get wisdom from you, this position is not mine but yours, I will continue to be your servant,” said Hwende.
