CHIREDZI – Addmore Hwarare, a Zanu PF supporter who leads the largest sugarcane farmers association has begged the Belarusian Government to donate maize to alleviate the poverty and hunger in Zimbabwe.
Hwarare who leads the Commercial Sugarcane Farmers Association of Zimbabwe (CSFAZ) made the plea to Belarusian ambassador to Zimbabwe Igor Marshalov last Tuesday.
Marshalov was in Chiredzi for the commissioning of a Bison Agro Machinery Service Centre. He was accompanied by the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Leanid Pinchuck and other delegates.
Bison Agro Machinery is a Belarusian agro –machinery supplier and the branch was opened to provide spare parts and services to 150 Lowveld farmers who acquired its machinery.
Hwarare said Zimbabwe is reeling from drought as a direct result of the El Nino and the country needs help in feeding its subjects.
“We have seen what you have done for our country but we also heard through the grapevine that you have excess maize in your country. Help our President with grain also, the country has drought, assist our President with some maize please,” pleaded Hwarare.
His sentiments come barely two months after Apostle Andrew Wutaunashe said the country is food secure and those complaining of drought are cry-babies.
President Mnangagwa declared drought a national disaster in April this year.
Hwarare also pleaded with the delegates to construct a sugar mill in Mkwasine to relieve pressure on the two Tongaat Hulett sugar mills which the Lowveld farmers depend on.
He also urged them to employ locals at their service centre to empower the local community by creating employment.
“We also need a third mill in Mkwasine, we know you can help us. Don’t bring workers from Harare, we have children here who have all the requirements needed so employ them and you can even take them to Belarus for training and bring them back,” said Hwarare.
